Hi guys,

I'm thinking about replacing my notebook. While the old one (Samsung R40plus) is still in a very good shape and performance,  but when it comes to mobility it's a pain in the ass (15,4" Display and 2,7kg) and not very nice to transport in a bag on my bike (which I need to). So I'm open for any ideas / experience you guys can share with me.

Things it should have:
- 13" display
- max 1,8kg
- around 1000€ max
- quiet
- solid
- outside use (display reflections)
- powerful enough to do some advanced math (matlab / simulink) and CAD / CAE

A preinstalled operating system is not needed, I get free licenses via my uni...

So far I was looking at this one: LG P300-U.APMBG, but you might have a better idea.

What about this one?

HP Pavilion dv3550eg Bronze
13,3 Zoll WXGA Display (1280 x 800)
- Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 Prozessor (2 GHz)
- 3 GByte DDR2
- Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS (512 MByte DDR2 VRAM)
- 320 GByte Festplatte (5400 U/min)
- HDMI, eSATA, zwei Akkus und Fernbedienung
- Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
- ca. 750 Euro

http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/hp-pavilion-dv3550eg-bronze-840/1

or that one
Sony Vaio VGN-Z11WN/B
(no forget it it's to expensive)

In the end it's more or less a question of money and personal likings because the differences are usually small.
A  bit more battery time here a better gfx card there etc.
I did not much Notebook repairs tbh (most times the display was damaged or the damage was to big to be repaired cheaply)  but the most brands I had were Medion and Sony  Wink

Last but not least I like LG stuff
got a washing machine, a dvd, a dvd burner, a LCD TV, etc. from them and all things are working great  Smiley

NO!!

VRAM is (V)ideo ram the GFX card has itself (if ther is not written "shared" somewhere)
Shared Ram means your gfx card takes this "shared memory" from your normal ram
so if you got 4GB Ram and a gfx cards with 512MB shared ram then you got only 3,5GB ram as the rest will be shard with the gfx card.
Very big difference, I would always go for a gfx card that has it's own ram chips as shared ram is also slower

Is it vista home basic or a higher version?

Company just bought a 17" laptop for my wife has vista premium on it I am told it will update to win7 for free in Oct.

I find win7 to be slightly better than vista ultimate and way better than basic.

Its a shame you cant just wipe it and put win98se on Smiley it would run so fast Smiley maybe an XP install?

SD.

toshiba u400-15g
Looks good to me
and if it has what you need then it's ok.

will stick to xp for now.
I would do the same.  Wink

Did you also get a win7 upgrade with it?

btw.
From the 15.07.2009 you can pre order win7 for 4 weeks
(think it's the home edition without IE installed and I think it's europe wide but I'm not sure)
for only 50 euros in a lot of stores and online (amazon etc.)
Sounds like a good deal to me as the final version will be maybe ~119 Euros.

I'm on the hunt again...

Notebook had a faulty DVD-Drive and since they had no instant replacement I got my money back...

I also found the newer model of what bernd suggested: dv3650eg, but since I want to get my hands on it before I buy (feel the build quality) I'm not so sure about it.

I think "Media Markt" also has it, maybe you can test it there (and buy it later somewhere else where it is cheaper).
I often do it this way  laughing7

they don't... already been there and asked. only if you pre-order it.

BTW: how comparable is the t3200 from the toshiba to a core 2 duo of the same speed? I'm tempted to buy the 15g again as it's really cheap 630€ atm. I didn't really had the chance to give it a real go...

BTW: how comparable is the t3200 from the toshiba to a core 2 duo of the same speed?

The biggest diff for a notebook would be for me the power consumption:
T3200 needs 65 watt
P7540 only 45 watt (less heat, less power = longer akku run time)

T  has only 1024 L2 cache and the P model has 3072 L2 CPU cache

In general I would say the the Core 2 Duo beats the DualCore almost everywhere
except in the the price  Wink

But a head-to-head record is always not that easy with CPUs.
I would think that the P model is about one third quicker then the T version.
I saw some benchmark lists with almost the same Mhz CPUs and the
P was on place 42
T was on place 74

in others lists:
P on place 32
T on place 48

maybe that helps you
