I thought of a little app that would be great to work with LFS, but I don't have the know-how so thought I would write down my thoughts to see what comes of it.

The shift+ and ctrl+ function keys are a nice increase over the standard F1 to F8, but I tend not to use them because I can't remember them. I tried writing them down but it's not possible to check while racing.

Often I want to respond to something that happened while racing - not very realistic perhaps but just trying to be polite.

I wonder if there's a voice recognition program out there that would help. It doesn't need to be full blown, I'm thinking like voice tags on your mobile phone where you prerecord the tag and the phone only has to differentiate between them (instead of recognising the words).
Then I envisage a trigger being passed to some sort of profiler software that would do the key presses for shift+, crtl+ function keys.

What do you think, wasting my time?
Alas, all beyond my capablilties I fear.

Well, I'm ignoring most of the chat during the race anyway (when I read it I usually find myself in the green Wink) so I could imagine that goes for many others as well. Plus, in most leagues there is no chatting allowed during the race anyway Wink

But what I would like is that we should the TS more often, not just for things like MOE Smiley

Me too, but I can only connect to our team TS when my firewall is completely disabled. Sad

I had a little search for a solution, that is described by P1lot.
And this is my result:

I found a program, called: VoiceCommander1.0, which you can download here:
http://callofduty.filefront.com/file/COD2_VoiceCommander;60156

It works only for Windows. Because only american Windows have integrated speech recognition, you need probably the MS Speech SDK Version 5.1, so u need the SpeechSDK51.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5E86EC97-40A7-453F-B0EE-6583171B4530&displaylang=en#filelist

You also have to train the voice recognition to work good. A good and easy tutorial, you find here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/moskowitz_02september23.mspx

You can set the commands for VoiceCommander either via the program-interface or by editing the VoiceRecognition.xml in the program directory.

I havent tried to add CTRL/ALT+F1-12 Keys.

You can see in the screenshot some keys i set up for LFS. You first need to tell the magic word (speed) and then the command and it works like a charm.  icon_thumleft

I am really impressed. You can not only use it for textchat, but also for direction lights (7,8,9,0).

It's a good question that, we used to use something similar in FS2004, you used to say "flaps"  "gear" etc etc, and it worked pretty well.

I'll see if I can remember what that program was..........

edit : pretty sure it was the voice commander software bismarck listed

Turns out there's many other programs out there that are also capable of this including...
Shoot
Voice Activated Commands (VAC)
Flight Assistant
Voice Buddy
VR Commander
Game Commander

I was struggling with COD voice commander (but know what was wrong now), I'm trying VAC at the moment. Haven't used it while racing yet, it's a bit hit or miss. It's impressive when it works.

I had a look at them, because when it works its really a help. I didn't test the expensive ones, because the free ones already meet my expectations.

Flight Assistant is my personal favourite after the tests.

VoiceCommander 1.0freeyesyesyeschanging commands needs a program restart Sad
Flight Assistant 2.0 love5freeyesyesyesYou need to follow the installation hints and download  every library thats mentioned. Good instructions. Easy configuration. Can reply with speak a user-defined feedback. If LFS could deliver data, you could ask for your race position or your left fuel and it will SAY it to you. icon_thumleft
Shootfreeyes??crashed with error message while trying to create a profile. Didn't run. Sad
Voice Activated Commands10$30daysyesyesworks very good, full customizable. User Interface a bit complex.
Voice Buddy 3.039.95$no??-
VR Commander9.95$15days??-
Game Commander249.95$30days??-
Game Commander374.95$ nonono??-

And one problem is, you need a headset, where no sound from the speakers get to the micro, because else some of your keys are pressed, when you don't want it. Especially when you drive loud cars at high speed, your commands were not recognised. Also it looks like some keys are not usable, like the horn, light, pit limiter. Don't know why atm.

I append a configuration file, that contains some keys for LFS. (F-Keys depend on what you have set there) Just copy the file in the directory of the Flight Assistant Software.

This will be the first thing I'll have to test myself when I'm back with DSL.
