Hey Gav,
Thats a very weird problem, to be perfectly honest, I have seen it before where people could not get setup using anything other than a WEP key, but I never found out why that was so, or how they fixed it.

But, if its suggesting there is too much noise on the line, it could be the frequency its on is being used by another device, thats my theory on that. Have you also tried moving the router closer to your gf's computer?

Hope someone can answer you better than me icon_thumleft

Gav Im no expert in all this:), however what speed is the signal set to is it an 802.11g or 802.11b or both? is one of the PC's running win 98 or vista?
if you do a network search how many other WLANs can you see?

sometimes things are truly unexplainable Smiley

Both running XP Pro. Where the router is there's one other WiFI, where the PC is there's several poor signal WiFis, but I've chosen an unused channel (including non-broadcast SSI).
Speed currently at 802.11g but I've tried others to no avail, switched off all the manufacturer specific accelerations etc.
I've moved the router about, but only by the length of the cable to my PC
I think it's just one of those things

I know that some routers have exactly the same problems with WPA /WPA2.
They only work with a special extra software, maybe check your router fabricator for it..

btw
do you have all the latest XP updates (I bet yes but just a thought):

Well I have just had my 1st lesson in wireing a CAT5 cable to a Ext socket, and how to "hardwire" it the other end.  CAT5 cable it better than BT Ext cable, as its paired and twisted, therefore getting less interference over longer distances.

Now just need my staple gun, and I am away, and back to being hard wired  notworthy
